HOW TO APPLY

When conducting graduate research, it is important to remember one鈥檚 own wellbeing and personal growth. Undertaking such a substantial piece of research is exciting and challenging in equal measures and will no doubt lead you to become a skilled researcher. Doing so in Aotearoa New 九州影院requires you to give effect to Te Tiriti o Waitangi through your research. This involves enhancing your knowledge of Te Ao M膩ori and embedding it into your research appropriately regardless of your discipline or research topic.听

Taking care of your wellbeing and developing strategies to deal with research-related challenges should therefore be a key aspect of your development as a researcher.听

There are numerous workshops to support your personal growth, expand your knowledge of te ao M膩ori, and address common challenges throughout your research journey.听

Personal effectiveness

Project Manage your Thesis

Embarking on a research degree is a big project. For the majority of doctoral students this means 3 to 4 years of independent study and dealing with a large amount of notes and data. For research master鈥檚 students this means producing a sizable thesis within a relatively short timeframe. Managing these research projects takes a considerable amount of organisation.

This workshop will introduce you to some project management techniques and tools to help you stay on top of your research.

Time Management听

This session covers methods for making the best use of your time. You鈥檒l learn how to:

  • organise your time well with realistic, advanced planning
  • optimise your efforts and grades with focused and strategic study
  • 听stop procrastinating and get the work done

The Writing Collective

The Writing Collective is an in-person, 2.5-hour 鈥榮hut up and write鈥-style session that runs fortnightly. At the Writing Collective, participants participate in short, intense writing stints with brief breaks in between and time for discussion at the end.听

Regular participation enables participants to develop insights into their individual writing habits and to become more intentional about engaging with the writing process. It also helps thesis writers to maintain motivation and make steady, incremental progress with their writing.听

The Globetrotting Researcher: A Guide to Thriving in a Multicultural Workplace.

What do we take for granted when interacting with people? How do our communication preferences 鈥 largely shaped by our own cultures and experiences 鈥 impact others who are culturally different from us? What are the likely pitfalls to be aware of, and what strategies can we employ to remain effective when working/studying in an increasingly multicultural world?听

Regular travel for international work assignments and/or collaborating in diverse teams are integral to many contemporary professions. This workshop aims to provide useful strategies to address some of those issues.

This workshop discusses issues relating to stress within academia and the research student journey and provides strategies on how to establish routines that help you to 鈥榞et in the zone鈥, regulate emotions and manage unwanted thoughts as well as respond to stress that might result from systemic issues.听

How to Procrastinate ....Effectively!

Why do people procrastinate? Even the most seasoned researchers will come across procrastination at some point in their research journey.听 What are some myths about procrastination, and how can听we work this common phenomenon to our advantage?听This workshop seesk to unpack the听emotional, cognitive, and behaviroual factors contributing to the act of procrastination (i.e. writer's block), followed by effective听strategies to maintain research progress and personal听wellbeing when procrastination occurs.听

Get it Done!听

This workshop is particularly helpful for those who are in the final year of their doctoral journey. In this workshop, we will discuss how perfectionism听manifests and interferes with thesis writing process and personal wellbeing at this crucial stage, as well as sharing useful tools听to manage time and thesis writing tasks to submission听

i-Connect听

i-Connect is a monthly event designed for international research students who are new to UC.听 It is a collective social learning space where a theme relevant to international research students'听social-cultural transition within an Aotearoa context will be discussed. It is a safe and relaxing space where participants can share their insights, experiences, and ask questions relating to the theme discussed in the session. Some benefits of jonining the i-Connect include

  • learning something new in a fun, relaxing way
  • meeting peers across different cultures and academic disciplines
  • having an opportunity to share personal learning and ask questions arising from inter-cultural encounters
  • practice oral communication in English
  • networking听

The theme for each session will be updated on the UC Graduate School events calendar.听

*While i-Connect targets first-year international research students, advancing PhD students who are inteterested in networking are also welcome.听

    Whaowhia te Kete M膩tauranga workshop series

    Whaowhia te kete m膩tauranga: Aotearoa te k膩inga h艒u (tahi)

    This workshop looks closely at the formation of Aotearoa New 九州影院as the land of M膩ori sovereignty. It examines migrations across and around the Pacific Ocean which eventually lead to Polynesian movements into Aotearoa. Furthermore, the workshop discusses pre-Western M膩ori belief systems, traditional M膩ori social hierarchies, and reveal the levels of classism that existed at that time.听

    Whaowhia te kete m膩tauranga: Te t墨matanga o te tikanga rua (rua)

    This workshop looks closely at European expansion into the Pacific Ocean and Aotearoa New Zealand. It examines non-M膩ori explorations of Aotearoa New 九州影院and reveal early interactions that took place. Furthermore, this workshop discusses how these interactions lead to the conceptualisation of M膩ori and British Crown partnership and the beginnings of biculturalism in Aotearoa New Zealand.

    Whaowhia te kete m膩tauranga: Ng膩 kupu o te whenua (toru)

    This workshop looks closely at the formation of M膩ori and P膩keh膩 relations. It examines the texts of He Wakaputanga o te Rangatiratanga o Nu Tireni (the Declaration of Independence) and Te Tiriti o Waitangi (the Treaty of Waitangi). Furthermore, this workshop outlines the basic differences between the te reo M膩ori and English versions of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the M膩ori and Crown disagreements that stem from them.听

    Whaowhia te kete m膩tauranga: Ng膩 pakanga o Aotearoa (wh膩)

    This workshop looks closely at warfare, both physical and 鈥榣egal鈥, between M膩ori and the Crown. It examines certain areas of Aotearoa New 九州影院that felt the full brunt of warfare regarding M膩ori and the Crown. Furthermore, this workshop discusses legislation that coincided with warfare and advanced the Crown colonisation of Aotearoa New Zealand.听

    Whaowhia te kete m膩tauranga: Mana t艒rangap奴 mana kawanatanga (rima)

    this workshop looks closely at M膩ori protest movements that stem from a relationship breakdown with the Crown/New 九州影院government. It examines certain protest movements and the formation of the Waitangi Tribunal. Furthermore, this workshop discusses the Treaty Settlement process and debates whether this process is positive or negative for hap奴 and iwi entities.
